USPS Releases Statistics Before National Dog Bite Awareness Month
June of 2025 is Dog Bite Awareness Month, and this campaign is created by the USPS. As part of Dog Bite Awareness Month, the USPS released shocking statistics about dog attacks suffered by its workers. According to them, over 6,000 mail carriers were attacked by aggressive dogs in 2024 alone. As The Independent notes, this is a seven-year high.
Many of these dog attacks occurred in Cobb County, and some undoubtedly led to permanent disabilities, disfigurements, and other life-altering consequences. Some postal workers have died due to past dog attacks, leaving families with incredible financial burdens and psychological trauma.
As part of its campaign, the USPS warns dog owners across the United States to carefully secure their animals. They also warned owners not to let their dogs “roam freely.” Finally, the USPS highlighted the fact that all dog breeds have the potential to become violent. Even a small dog can bite, and even an old dog can become highly aggressive.
Some Dog Attacks are Completely Unpredictable
Veteran mail carriers are well aware of the threat posed by aggressive dogs. They may also develop various strategies to remain safe if one of these dogs appears. However, there is only so much a postal worker can do in this situation. Sometimes, dogs appear out of nowhere, and there is no time to react.
One of the most interesting insights from the USPS is the fact that dogs often perceive mail carriers as threats to children in the house.
